Impulse Buying Hack: The Walk-Away Win

I know exactly what retail therapy feels like — heading out “just to browse” and suddenly holding something that seems like a great idea… for someone, for someday, for some occasion. I used to do this all the time. So I created a simple habit that changed everything.
The Hack: The Walk-Away Win
When you’re holding something you want (but don’t need), try this:
Walk around the store three times with the item in your hand.
Ask yourself:
Do I really need this?
What are my actual goals right now?
What do I want more — this item or paying off debt, taking that trip, buying a new laptop?
Then — put it down.
Walk away. Right out the door.
(And yes — you earn points for healthy spending in your tracker if you are doing the 30-Day Challenge!)
People Will Think You're Weird — Let Them
This habit used to drive my husband and daughter nuts. “Just put it back already!” they’d say.
But they didn’t realize I was battling temptation - I needed to win!
The Upgrade
Now, instead of wandering the aisles, I walk straight to the cashier, hand them the item, and say:
“I don’t need this today.” And if I have to, I say it out loud to myself: “I’m saving for a laptop.” “I’m choosing the trip over this.”
The cashier might smile politely or look confused…But me? I walk away feeling like a warrior. I won. And honestly — that feeling is better than anything I could’ve bought.
I challenge you to take a moment to check in with yourself:
How do you feel when you open your bank account?
What thoughts or emotions come up when you review your spending?
Awareness is the first step to change. And you’re already doing it!
