Stop the Overwhelm - It's Time to Feel Good About Your Money

Feeling overwhelmed by money, debt, or financial decisions isn’t uncommon — and it’s rarely about numbers alone. Many of us carry years of confusion, guilt, and pressure that make even thinking about money stressful. In this post, we’ll pause together, acknowledge those emotions, and explore the courage it takes to start moving forward — while also reflecting on who you want to be this year, both financially and personally.

Hi there, everyone.

It’s the Shameless Spender here. Let’s have a quiet conversation today. Let’s just sit in some stillness for a few moments. Take a breath. Settle your shoulders. Be here with me.

I want to share something with you — something that happens in my office all the time.

People come in… and they’re apprehensive. I can feel the anxiety sitting just under the surface. They’re a little standoffish, a little aloof. Not because they’re rude — but because they’re not sure what’s going to happen next. They’ve never been in this moment before. They sit down in the chair across from me, and then — after a few seconds — they begin to talk.

And the words spill out like a flood:

  • “It’s overwhelming.”

  • “I’m frustrated.”

  • “I don’t understand any of this.”

  • “Why didn’t someone teach me this?”

  • “I just don’t get it.”

And then the emotions come too: frustration, disappointment, sadness, fear, anger. Almost every time, somewhere in the middle of the conversation, they apologize to me.

They say:

  • “I’m sorry — I didn’t mean to sound upset.”

  • “I’m sorry if I seem harsh.”

  • “I’m sorry if I’m being difficult.”

Here’s the truth: I never take it personally. Because it’s not directed at me. It’s directed at the air — at their circumstances — at the years and years of confusion, shame, pressure, and fear they’ve been carrying around.

What I see is courage. Bravery. Determination. Hope.

If you’re carrying that weight today, know this: you are not broken.

You are showing up.

You are taking steps.

And even in moments of overwhelm, you are moving forward.

Shifting from Overwhelm to Intention

One of the most powerful ways to move forward is to ask a different question: Who do I want to be this year? Instead of focusing only on resolutions like “save more” or “exercise more,” think about the persona you want to step into.

Who are you when you’re at your best—confident, intentional, and living fully? Here’s a list of possibilities to inspire you:

  • You the Fearless – Bold and decisive, taking action without letting fear hold you back.

  • You the Cherished – Prioritizes meaningful relationships and self-love.

  • You the Confident – Knows your worth and makes choices that reflect it.

  • You the Financially Free – Takes control of money, plans ahead, lives without financial stress.

  • You the Adventurer – Tries new things, explores, and embraces change.

  • You the Peaceful – Focuses on balance, mindfulness, and mental well-being.

  • You the Money Master – Masters your finances, makes informed decisions, and grows wealth strategically.

Making It Real

Once you’ve chosen one or two personas, reflect on why they matter to you. What would embodying this persona look like in your daily life? For example:

  • The Fearless might mean speaking up, taking on a challenging project, or pursuing a passion you’ve been putting off.

  • The Financially Free could involve setting a budget, building an emergency fund, or planning for long-term goals.

  • The Peaceful might mean learning to say “no” without guilt or adding a small money habits you can repeat without decision fatigue or temptations.

Exercise: Take a moment to write down your chosen personas. Describe the actions, habits, and mindset shifts that will bring this version of you to life. Keep it somewhere visible so you can return to it throughout the year.

Moving Forward With Courage

Even if money has felt overwhelming or confusing, stepping into a new persona gives you a framework to grow intentionally. Each small step—asking questions, setting boundaries, building skills—moves you closer to the person you want to be.

Remember: you are not alone. You are courageous for showing up. You are capable of change. And the journey from overwhelm to confidence starts with the quiet, brave steps you take today.
